Guest Bedroom Big Reveal

The guest room is finished!!!  When I walk in the room this is what I see...

Last week, I showed part of the room when I posted about the lyrics I wrote on the black, painted wooden board using a Sharpie paint pen.  I wrote the words from U2's "One".

On the opposite side of the bedroom is a queen size bed and a newly created headboard.  To make the headboard, I took four wooden shutters that were used in the girl's room when we lived in Virginia.  I attached the shutters together using flat straight brackets, then wrapped a twin size mattress pad over the top of the shutters (sideways) and secured it using a staple gun.  Then I wrapped a white flannel sheet over the pad and stapled again.  After the cushion feeling was attached to the board, I added a gray and white striped sheet from West Elm as the fabric for the headboard.  I wrapped the striped sheet over the flannel sheet, then stapled it to the back.  Voila, new headboard!

The nightstand next to the bed is an extra wicker hamper I had.... I placed a mirrored tray on top and added a few books and accessories...

Above the nightstand is a watercolor painting I recently did....  I also gave an update to an old frame by painting it gold using Martha Stewart's liquid gilding.

Ritva curtains from Ikea are hung above the window.... I added black grosgrain ribbon along the edges just like I did in the living room and the girl's bedroom (more detailed directions on adding grosgrain ribbon here).

Along one wall, I placed a bookcase and a few pieces of art.  For the gold and white chevron print, I quickly drew chevron stripes using a Prismacolor marker (just like I used the marker in the dining room)..... they stripes are uneven, but I like the imperfectness.

And here's the best part, the before and afters pictures.  This is the look of the room when we purchased the house a year ago (I had a few ideas and inspiration photos of what I wanted the room to be)....

Then I made some progress unpacking boxes after we moved in the house and set-up a temporary design for the room....

And finally a finished room....

One Lyrical Artwork

We had a few guests come to stay with us during the week of Christmas so it gave me motivation to finish decorating the guest room before their arrival.  I wanted our guests to feel welcome, be comfortable and most of all have their own space to relax.

While arranging the room (using things around the house), I decided to switch up the artwork hung on the narrow wall that's sandwiched between two closet doors (so awkward).  I took a leftover piece of mdf board (perfect fit!), brushed one coat of black paint on the board, then wrote the lyrics of "One", by U2.

To write the lyrics, I used a white Sharpie paint pen...

The project was super easy!  The paint on the text looks a little faded (like when a wall could use another coat of paint).... I could go over the text again with the paint pen, but that would be time consuming and a) I'm not patient enough and b) I kinda like the look of faded text on a faded black board.

Guest Room Makeover

While we were living in VA, my brother-in-law had been living in Barcelona for a few years and decided to make a trip back to the states to visit for the summer.  Since we had the space and we absolutely love, love, love him, we opened our house and offered him a guest room (not the pink one).

One of our guest rooms was empty and ready to be used, but first it needed some work.  His flight was booked pretty quick so I needed to get movin' and fix up the space (fast).  Here's what I had to work with (remember, this is in our house back in VA)...

Since the room was empty, meaning NO bed, the majority of the budget was spent on purchasing a twin bed.  With the little money I had left-over, I bought fabric for the desk and a throw pillow.  Everything else in the room was borrowed from other rooms around the house.

After I painted the ceiling, walls and trim (using left-over paint from other rooms), I arranged the room to help make him feel at home.

The headboard above the bed was a scrap piece of plywood leftover from another project... I painted it with Benjamin Moore's chalkboard paint.  The piece was longer than the width of the twin bed, so I hung it to extend over the nightstand.  My brother in law is an entrepreneur, so I thought if he woke up in the middle of the night with one of his brilliant ideas, he could quickly jot it down on the chalkboard.

I layered the bed with a few extras that were stored in closets (the throw and studded pillow are now being used in my son's bedroom here in TX).  And the tree stump was saved after we had half of our yard chopped down... I scraped off the bark, dried it out, sanded it down, sealed it, then placed it in the room to use as a nightstand.  Perfect size!

On one of the walls I placed a desk area since my brother-in-law would mostly likely be working from the house.  I thought I'd give him a desk as one option to work and set it up with work-related things (lamp, pens, books, magnetic board, etc).  Behind the curtain is a place for all the unsightly-cords, storage, etc.  And since he likes to travel, I hung a map above the desk. 

This bedroom redo came together pretty quick...

If you've been following along, you may have noticed that a lot of the things in this room have been moved around to different rooms in our new house.  The framed map is now in the playroom; the desk, curtain rod, nailhead trimmed pillow and throw are in my 4-yr old's bedroom, the striped pillow is used as a chair cushion in the playroom, and the frames started in a pile but have now moved all around the house, especially in this gallery and this gallery.

I love decorating an entire house with a coordinating color scheme.... things can get moved around and around and around again....

A Frame and Fabric: The Tutorial

I thought I'd take you back to the guest room that I worked on last week and show what I did to change up a ho-hum frame that was stashed in the closet.  See the flower-framed-art above the nightstand (the nightstand that is actually an upside down hamper...shhh)?

Do you ever come across frames that don't have a glass insert, a mat, or maybe even backing?  I have several of these and I use them all the time (if you look close,  you'll see some here, here, here and here).  That art above the nightstand is fabric... yes, fabric.  So simple... grab your glue gun and a few other supplies:

1  Gather an empty frame, glue gun and glue sticks, scissors, fabric chalk (or pencil) and a piece of fabric (large enough to fit the frame).
2  Heat the glue gun.
3  Lay the fabric on a flat surface, right side up, and place the frame over top. 
4  Position the frame on the part of fabric you wish to showcase (move the frame around... up, down, diagonal... see what looks best before you make a cut)

 

5  Use fabric chalk to outline the frame (I used a pencil and it worked just fine).
6  Remove the frame and cut the chalk (or pencil) outline.

7  Turn the frame over, back side up.
8  Lay the cut-out fabric over the frame and position the fabric to showcase what you'd like to see.

9  Get the glue gun, and line the inside edge of the frame with glue.
10  Press the fabric on top of the glue and work your way down to the bottom of the frame.
11  Repeat with the glue and fabric on the opposite frame edge, pulling the fabric taute as you move down the frame.
12  Repeat the step above along the other two frame edges, pulling the fabric taute as you move along.

13  If you have a lot of fabric overhang (like me), grab the scissors and cut off the excess.
14  Then turn your frame over and admire your good work.

15  Time to hang it up!

This is one good reason to save fabric scraps... they come to good use!  What have you done with your fabric scraps lately?
